Assistant Secretary of State Marie Royce met with ethnic Kazakhs and Uyghurs formerly detained in internment camps in Xinjiang, and whose family members have been detained and missing.
She thanked the family members for their bravery openly speaking, which shows the true face of the People’s Republic of China’s abusive policies and helps build international pressure for the PRC to stop its abuses.
Assistant Secretary Royce said, “We stand with you in calling on the government of China to immediately stop the abuse and recognize the rights of the Muslim and Turkic people of Xinjiang to practice their religion and honor their cultures. I am honored to hear your stories. I will carry them with me and share them so even more people will understand the truth of what is happening in Xinjiang.”
In Xinjiang, the Chinese Communist Party has committed egregious human rights abuses against Uyghurs, ethnic Kazakhs, and members of other minority groups. Documented human rights abuses include coercive population control methods, forced labor, arbitrary detention in internment camps, mass surveillance, family separation, and repression of cultural and religious expression.
The United States call on the Chinese Communist Party to immediately end these horrific practices.
