U.S. Visas—What Business Travelers Need to Know
The U.S. Embassy and Consulate General in Kazakhstan value trade and investment as an integral part of the U.S.-Kazakhstani bilateral relationship. We understand the need of business travelers to travel frequently, and sometimes on short notice, to the United States. With that in mind, we have made the process for applying for a B1/B2 visa to the United States as simple as possible. However, there are two things that business travelers will need to know in order to prepare a visa application: first, apply early. If applicants are unable to secure an interview appointment in time for travel, they should use our expedited appointment request system. Second, applicants should be prepared to answer questions in the interview and expect to clarify details about their work and intended travel to the United States. For further information, please visit https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas.html.
How to Apply
The application process begins at http://www.ustraveldocs.com, where prospective travelers pay the visa application fee, complete the Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application form (DS-160), and schedule their visa interview appointment in either Nur-Sultan or Almaty. Additionally, we provide another convenient service for travelers whose U.S. visa has expired in the past 11 months; these travelers may apply by mail for a renewal without an interview. For more information see “Renew My Visa” found at the website link above.
The surest way to guarantee a stress-free application process is to apply early. The United States is becoming a more popular destination for Kazakhstani tourists and business travelers, and during peak periods, the Embassy and Consulate General may have longer than usual wait times for interview appointments. Travelers should apply at least 4-6 weeks before their planned date of departure and avoid making non-refundable purchases such as airline tickets before receiving their visas.
The good news is that we now issue 10-year, multiple-entry visas to most eligible applicants, so there is no need to wait 4-6 weeks every time you plan to travel.
Expedited Appointment Requests
We understand the necessity for urgent business travel. Expedited interview appointments are available to applicants unable to secure an interview appointment in time for travel to the United States. Valid reasons for an expedited appointment include urgent business meetings or technical training. Only the traveler can make an expedited appointment request; this can be done by logging into his or her profile on ustraveldocs.com. (We do not accept third-party inquiries on behalf of applicants, nor can we accept letters or phone calls outside the applicant’s portal on the website.) The link to “Apply for an Expedited Appointment” will take the applicant step-by-step through the specific criteria and procedure for requesting an expedited appointment. Under most circumstances, applicants meeting the criteria for urgent business travel will be able to reschedule interviews before their date of departure.
Preparing for the Visa Interview
During the visa interview, a U.S. consular officer will ask applicants about their employment and the purpose of their planned travel to the United States. Applicants should be ready to give a detailed description of their work in Kazakhstan, though providing documents is usually unnecessary. The consular officer will want to discuss information that a bona fide business traveler would reasonably know about his or her work. The applicant should also be able to articulate the need for travel to the United States and how it relates to their current employment.
Receiving Your Visa
At the conclusion of the interview, the consular officer will immediately let the applicant know if the visa is approved. If the visa is issued, it will be in the applicant’s hands in just a few days. Visas are typically ready for pickup at our partner courier’s service office two days after the interview, or they can be delivered within two to five days (depending on the destination address) if the applicant prefers home delivery service.
We understand that applying for a visa can seem like a daunting process, but our aim is to make the visa application process as smooth and stress free as possible.
