Michelle Yerkin is a career Foreign Service Officer who most recently served as the Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Reykjavik, Iceland. Since joining the Foreign Service in 2003, Michelle has also served in Almaty, Kazakhstan; Panama City, Panama; Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; San Salvador, El Salvador; and Moscow, Russia. Her domestic tours include the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (EB); the Bureau of Arms Control, Verification, and Compliance (AVC); and the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs (WHA). Michelle graduated cum laude from Yale University, where she majored in Russian and Eastern European Studies. She earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Minnesota School of Law. Michelle grew up on a farm in northern Minnesota and is a proud descendant of the White Earth Nation of Ojibwe (Chippewa) tribe. Michelle and her husband Zhomart have four children. She speaks Russian and Spanish and is currently studying Kazakh.
