Event: A state of emergency has been declared throughout Kazakhstan, and a nationwide curfew is in place between the hours of 11pm and 7am. Expect security checkpoints, public transport disruptions, and limitations on travel throughout the country.
Clashes in Almaty between security forces and protesters have turned violent and crowds have broken into government buildings. Both protesters and police have reported injuries. Emergency services such as hospitals and polyclinics have been disrupted including reports of attacks on ambulances.
There have been widespread flight disruptions and both domestic and international flights have been cancelled. Almaty airport and railway stations are currently closed and city entrances are controlled by checkpoints. You are advised to check with your airline to confirm your flight and reminded to avoid travel during curfew hours.
Communications services countrywide have been limited and internet access has been blocked. Denial of internet access can impact other services such as banking, credit card transactions, and Covid-19 testing. Coordinate with your medical provider to determine testing availability.
U.S. government personnel in Almaty are strongly urged to shelter in place, avoid standing next to balconies or windows, and stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. Further, all are advised to avoid crowds or demonstrations.
