Event: Protests have been reported in multiple cities throughout Kazakhstan. Additionally, a protest will reportedly take place today at noon in Almaty’s Republic Square and other cities. The Government of Kazakhstan has declared a state of emergency in Mangystau and the city of Almaty. Initial reporting indicates there will be a curfew from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Police response has included use of tear gas and arrests have been reported. A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions, as well as internet network outages, are possible nationwide.
Non-sanctioned demonstrations usually end with mass arrests. Embassy personnel have been instructed to be cautious of large groups and informed that police have limited movement. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and can escalate into violence. You should avoid demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings or protests.
