(GENERAL PEDAGOGY)
The Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement (Fulbright TEA) Program brings international secondary-level teachers to the United States for a six-week program that offers academic seminars for professional development at a host university. Participants observe classrooms and share their expertise with teachers and students at the host university and at local secondary schools.
Program Activities and Timeline
General academic seminars focusing on new teaching methodologies, content-based instruction, project-based learning, infusing thematic topics into curriculum, lesson planning, and instructional technology training for teachers. A practicum of at least 40 hours with a U.S. partner teacher in local secondary schools. A variety of relevant professional development and cultural activities.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria
- Current secondary-level, full-time teachers of English, English as a Foreign Language (EFL), math, science, or social studies (civics, history, geography, global studies, etc.), including special education teachers in those subjects at institutions serving primarily a local population
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
- Five or more years of full-time teaching experience
- Demonstrated oral and written English language proficiency
- Citizen and resident of participating Fulbright TEA country
- Other requirements as indicated in the application
- Secondary-level teachers include both middle and high school teachers serving students between approximately 12 and 18 years of age
- The most competitive applicants will have shown evidence of leadership in their schools or districts
- Have no prior study experience in the U.S. or elsewhere outside of their home country.
Educational administrators (such as representatives or officials of the Ministry of Education) and school administrators who do not teach at least fifty percent of their time, full-time teacher trainers, university faculty, private English Language tutors, and teachers from schools primarily serving expatriates are not eligible. Please note candidates who have traveled to the United States in the last three years as part of any other ECA exchange program are not eligible.
An independent review committee will be convened to select participants for the program through merit-based competition. IELTS/TOEFL scores are not required at the time of your application. Semi-finalists will be invited for the interview.
Final decision will be made by the Bureau of Cultural and Educational Affairs of the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.
The application form must show the individual work of the participant. Plagiarism that renders the language, thoughts, expressions and ideas of another author as your own work without proper permission is unacceptable. Any type of plagiarism in the applicant’s application form or essay serves as a ground for immediate disqualification from the program.
The Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program provides:
- J-1 visa support
- Roundtrip airfare
- Accommodations, meals, and incidentals for the duration of the program
- Accident and sickness medical coverage (supplementary to participant’s existing insurance)
- An end-of program workshop in Washington, D.C.
- Professional development and cultural activities
At the beginning and end of the program, meetings will be held for all participants in Washington, DC.
