Gulmira Birzhanova: Freedom of speech is not just a right set out in the constitution, but a human right that is observed by the state.

WOMEN BUILDING BRIDGES BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND KAZAKHSTAN.

Graduate of the of the Department of State’s IVLP program, 2016, I work as a lawyer for the Media Legal Centre.  As such I specialize in drawing up laws, provide consultancy services and conduct legal trainings for journalists and NGOs. The trip to the USA provided me with an opportunity of seeing a completely different world, where freedom of speech is not just a right set out in the constitution, but a human right that is observed by the state.

I also learnt about the American justice system and the media landscape and how the freedom of expression is being realized in practice. This was also an opportunity to share experiences with colleagues in the United States. By all means whatever I have learnt on the trip I would be able to use in my day-to-day work.
