The U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan alerts U.S. citizens regarding recent cases of meningococcal infection in Almaty.

There have been a total of 15 confirmed cases of meningococcal infection in Almaty. The number is higher than usual but is not considered an outbreak.

Medical practitioners do not recommend any additional measures except practicing good hygiene, which can help you avoid exposure.

When someone has meningococcal meningitis the symptoms include sudden onset of fever, headache, and stiff neck. It is often accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, photophobia (increased sensitivity to light), and altered mental status (confusion). If you develop any symptoms, please contact your health provider.
