To ensure reliable communication with U.S. citizens, the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan maintains a warden system. The warden system provides a reliable way to contact American citizens in the event of an emergency, disaster, or threat, and to distribute other important information to American citizens as quickly as possible. To participate in the warden system, American citizens must register with the Embassy Consular Section in Astana or Almaty.
In the event of an emergency, the Embassy depends on “wardens”: private citizens who volunteer to assist Consular Officers in disaster preparedness and response, registration of newcomers, welfare and whereabouts requests and disseminating information to the American community in Kazakhstan.
We are seeking volunteers who will be living in Kazakhstan for the next couple of years who may wish to serve as wardens. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Alevtina An, American Citizens Services Section, U.S. Consulate General Almaty (USAKZ@state.gov).
U.S. citizens who plan to permanently depart Kazakhstan are encouraged to (a) update their travel status in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) (https://step.state.gov/step/) by identifying their departure date and contact information or (b) send an updated departure date to USAKZ@state.gov. This will help us accurately determine how many registered U.S. citizens currently reside in Kazakhstan.
