Message for U.S. Citizens: Change in Laws on Temporary Registration Requirement is not Applicable to Foreigners

As of January 1, 2017, all Kazakhstani citizens who reside at a certain place for one month or longer are required to obtain temporary registration for that location. According to the Migration Police in Astana, this requirement does not apply to foreigners in Kazakhstan. The procedures for registration of foreigners remain unchanged. Foreigners in Kazakhstan must register upon arrival to Kazakhstan by presenting a completed migration card noting their local residence address and receiving two stamps on the card. This registration is valid for 90 days and must be renewed. Foreigners may also register their local residence when renewing their long-term work visas with the Migration Police. In most instances, this registration is valid concurrent with the length of the work visa. In case of any change of local residence, foreigners are required to inform the Migration Police of this change in address.
