To apply for a U.S. passport at the Embassy or Consulate, applicants will need to provide their Social Security numbers. Questions related to this requirement should be directed to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
All non-emergency passports are processed in the United States. The U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Kazakhstan accept passport applications and then forward them electronically to the United States for printing. Processing time averages two weeks, but delays can occur in some cases. Accordingly, we urge everyone to renew their passports at least several months prior to their expiration.
Under certain urgent circumstances, the U.S. Embassy and Consulate can issue emergency passports, typically within 24 hours. These emergency passports are limited in validity and cannot be extended. Emergency passports must be exchanged for full-validity passports upon completion of emergency travel.
A child’s identity must be verified to the satisfaction of the consular officer before he or she can receive a U.S. passport. As a child’s appearance may change significantly over time, the consular officer may ask for additional proof of identity. Please bring as much evidence of a child applicant’s identity as possible. Examples of items that can be used to establish a child’s identity include:
Please note: you will not be able to bring any electronic devices into the Consular Section, so please have photos printed out for review.
In general, both parents and the child need to appear in person to apply for both first and renewal passports. Applicants must bring with them to their appointments:
Note: Original passports and birth certificates are returned to applicants immediately after their interviews.
If a parent or guardian is unable to appear in person with a child applicant, they must provide a Statement of Consent (form DS-3053).

Note: Original passports are returned to applicants immediately after their interviews.
*NB: If an applicant’s last passport was issued before he/she reached the age of 16 or the passport was issued more than 15 years ago, the applicant is required to complete the DS-11 passport application instead of the DS-82. The fee for this service is also slightly higher, at $165 instead of $130.
U.S. passports that are damaged or in poor condition must be replaced, as they are no longer valid for travel. For security reasons, damaged passports may be retained by the passport units. Please be aware that your damaged U.S passport is not proof of citizenship or identity.
If your U.S. passport is damaged, you must apply for a new passport in person by making an appointment.
