On January 27 at 15:00, U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan Press Attaché Wren Elhai opened the American Corner at the North Kazakhstan Oblast Universal Scientific Library in Petropavlovsk after its remodeling. The American Corner is a cultural center that provides information about U.S. culture, education in the United States, and American English and hosts a variety of events and activities. Zaure Nurmukhanova, acting head of the Department of Culture, North Kazakhstan Akimat, and Beibitgul Abilmazhinova, Director of the Library, will also participate in the ceremony.
The Embassy’s American Corners program seeks to inform and engage audiences across Kazakhstan. American Corners are joint ventures between the Embassy and host institutions like the Mukanov Library. Together, Embassy and library staff use corners to host programs that will increase understanding of the United States, such as discussions featuring guest speakers from the United States, master classes given by American musicians, movie nights showing American films, and exhibitions of American art and photography. On Friday, February 10, the Corner will host Petropavlovsk’s first ever English-language Spelling Bee, a competition for university students who are studying English.
The Petropavlovsk American Corner will be open to the public from 10:00 to 17:00, six days a week.
