U.S. Mission to Kazakhstan, Almaty City Akimat and «Posadiderevo.Kz» Launch Anti-Littering Campaign in Almaty

The U.S. Mission to Kazakhstan, Almaty city Akimat and local environmental nongovernmental organization PosadiDerevo.kz launched an anti-littering civic education and youth awareness campaign with the premiere of a public service announcement (PSA) in Almaty on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 5 PM at the Bekmambetov Cinema. The PSA will be screened on Khabar and Kazakhstan TV channels, at shopping centers, on public transportation as well as in cinemas in Almaty. Ambassador John Ordway, Chargé d’Affaires a.i of the U.S. Embassy, along with representatives of the Almaty city Akimat and Director of PosadiDerevo.kz Dauren Zholdasbayev made remarks at the event.

“The work that PosadiDerevo.kz is doing is an important part of raising awareness of environmental problems and helping people to understand the value of a clean and healthy environment,” said Ambassador Ordway. “I hope that this anti-littering campaign has impact in Kazakhstan. We live in such a beautiful country and it is important that we each take personal steps to protect our environment so that future generations in Kazakhstan can enjoy its beauty.”

Through the PSA, teenagers will learn about the harm that littering causes to their environment and what actions they can take to prevent it and how to clean it up. They will not only learn about the negative effects of littering, but also spread this message amongst their peers and parents, as well as to the wider community. In addition to the training, PosadiDerevo.kz plans to conduct city-wide cleanup activities in Almaty and Astana involving youth and their parents.

The project was funded by a Democracy Commission grant from the U.S. Mission to Kazakhstan. The Democracy Commission Small Grants Program awards grants to Kazakhstani nongovernmental, noncommercial organizations for specific projects around the world that support the development of democratic institutions.
