USA and Kazakhstan Cooperating to Prevent Radicalization to Violence

Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Sarah Sewall visited Kazakhstan August 15-18 to discuss ways the United States and Kazakhstan can work together against the common threat of violent extremism.  During her visit, Sewell, the top counterterrorism official at the Department of State, learned about Kazakhstan’s efforts in this area from government officials and members of civil society.  In a statement delivered in Astana, she stressed the importance of identifying and addressing the root causes of extremism, including government corruption and violations of human rights.
